Chicago, Illinois

The freight capital, with a few streets a carrier cannot use

Car shipping in Chicago benefits from more truck traffic than any city in the country, with one catch.

Ship Guy is a licensed auto transport broker. We book vetted carriers across Chicago and the suburbs, and we do not own the trucks.

The city is the rail and highway hub of the Midwest, so carriers are never far away. The catch is the street grid, with its low viaducts and truck bans.

This page covers where a truck can and cannot go in the city, and the winter parking rules. It also covers the huge outflow to Florida and Arizona, and lake-effect winters.

Chicago at a glance

Most pickups happen within 1 to 2 days, and suburban addresses are usually curbside.

Milwaukee and Indianapolis are same-day lanes. Detroit and St. Louis take a day. Florida runs three to four.

Carriers cannot use Lake Shore Drive, and many rail viaducts are too low for a loaded trailer. Tell us your street and we will route around both.

The Grid

Viaducts, the Drive, and Where the Truck Can Go

Chicago has hundreds of rail viaducts, and a loaded car carrier does not fit under many of them.

A full-size carrier stands about thirteen and a half feet tall. Plenty of underpasses on the South and West Sides clear less than that.

Lake Shore Drive bans commercial trucks outright. That rules out the direct route to the lakefront neighborhoods.

Carriers work the designated truck routes instead, using the Kennedy, the Dan Ryan, the Stevenson, and the Eisenhower. They meet you near an exit rather than on a side street.

For Lincoln Park, Lakeview, and the Gold Coast, a large lot near the expressway works well. Tell us your street and we will pick the spot before dispatch.

Parking Rules

Permit Zones, Snow Routes, and Alleys

Chicago parking rules matter more to a car carrier than in most cities.

Residential permit zones limit where a truck can idle. Alleys behind the lots are too narrow for a trailer of any length.

From December through March, the overnight ban on snow routes takes effect whether it snows or not. A two-inch snowfall triggers a parking ban on arterials as well.

Drivers plan around all of it by meeting on a wide commercial street or in a large lot. It takes a few minutes and avoids a ticket for everyone.

*Estimated 2026 ranges for a running sedan, open trailer. SUVs and trucks add roughly 10 to 25 percent; enclosed adds more. Season and carrier availability on your dates set the actual quote.

Interstate 80 east and Interstate 65 south carry the most volume. Florida and Arizona lanes swing with the snowbird season.

Because Chicago is a freight hub, even long lanes stay competitive. The cost guide explains the remaining variables.

The Outflow

Florida and Arizona: The Chicago Snowbird Lanes

More seasonal cars leave Chicago each fall than almost any city in the country.

The Florida lane runs Interstate 65 to Nashville, then Interstate 24 and 75 to the Gulf Coast. The Arizona lane follows Interstate 55, 44, and 40 to Phoenix.

Demand heading south is heaviest from October through December. Return traffic peaks from March through May.

Both lanes are so busy that pricing stays competitive despite the distance. Booking two to three weeks ahead in those windows keeps your options open.

Our snowbird page has seasonal planning tips for either direction.

Winter

Lake-Effect Snow and Deep Cold

Chicago winters are hard on schedules, and carriers respect them.

Lake-effect snow can bury the North Shore while the suburbs stay dry. Deep cold snaps slow loading and drain weak batteries.

When a storm hits, carriers wait for plows rather than push through. A winter window may stretch by a day.

Road salt is heavy here from November through March. Some owners choose enclosed transport for a collector car in those months.

Who Ships Here

Universities, Great Lakes, and the Suburbs

Beyond the snowbird lanes, Chicago moves follow the campuses and the corporate calendar.

The University of Chicago, Northwestern, DePaul, Loyola, and UIC send cars in each September and home each June. The handoff is usually at a lot near campus.

Naval Station Great Lakes, about thirty-five miles north, is the Navy’s only boot camp. Families and staff ship vehicles through the North Shore on orders.

Corporate relocations to the Loop and the suburbs follow start dates. Ship Guy is a private broker, unaffiliated with the military.

Your Options

Open or Enclosed in Chicago?

Open transport is the everyday choice, and most snowbird cars ride it south.

Enclosed transport keeps a car covered against salt, slush, and grit through the winter. The North Shore and Oak Brook keep enclosed carriers busy with collector cars.

A commuter car does fine on an open trailer. Both are laid out on our open and enclosed pages.

The Basics

How It Works and How to Prepare

It comes down to a quote, a pickup, and a delivery.

You approve the price and a carrier is assigned. At pickup, the driver notes the car’s condition on a Bill of Lading, and you both sign. You compare the car against it at delivery.

Our how it works and preparation guides go step by step.

Why Ship Guy

Why Chicago Drivers Choose Ship Guy

We know which viaducts a trailer clears and which streets ban trucks.

Ship Guy operates under active FMCSA brokerage authority, backed by a $75,000 surety bond. Both are verifiable.

A single coordinator works your shipment from quote to delivery. Open, enclosed, and expedited transport all come through that contact. The full list is on our services page.

Chicago FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't the carrier come down my street in Chicago?

Usually a viaduct or a truck ban. Many rail underpasses on the South and West Sides are too low for a loaded carrier. Lake Shore Drive bans commercial trucks outright. Alleys are too narrow and permit zones limit idling. The driver meets you on a wide commercial street or in a lot near an expressway instead. It is a short hop from home.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Chicago to Florida?

Tampa and Orlando usually run eight hundred to eleven hundred fifty dollars for a sedan. Miami runs a bit more. The lane follows Interstate 65 and 75, about twelve hundred miles. Southbound cars are pricier from October through December. Larger vehicles cost 10 to 25 percent more. Get a quote for your specific dates.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Chicago to Phoenix?

Usually nine hundred fifty to thirteen hundred fifty dollars for a sedan on an open trailer. The route runs about seventeen hundred fifty miles along Interstate 55, 44, and 40. The lane is busy enough to stay competitive. Enclosed transport and SUVs cost more. Ask for a quote to get a firm number.

Do winter parking rules affect my pickup?

They shape where the truck can stop. The overnight ban on snow routes runs from December through March regardless of weather. A two-inch snowfall adds a ban on arterials. Drivers meet you on a wide commercial street or in a large lot to stay clear of both. We pick the spot before dispatch.

Does lake-effect snow delay car shipping?

It can, usually by about a day. A storm can bury the North Shore while the suburbs stay dry. Carriers wait for plows rather than push through. Deep cold also slows loading. We call you as soon as a route changes. Enclosed transport is available if salt is a concern.

Can you ship a car for a University of Chicago or Northwestern student?

Yes, we handle student cars each September and June. Hyde Park and Evanston both have lots near campus where the truck can meet you. Delivery to a dorm curb is rarely possible in the city. An adult must be present at the handoff. Both months fill fast, so book ahead.

Do you handle moves for Naval Station Great Lakes?

Yes, the base is about thirty-five miles north on the lakefront. Housing sits behind a gate, so the driver meets you just outside it. We plan the schedule around your report date. Ship Guy is a private broker, unaffiliated with the military. Our military page has more.

Do you serve Naperville, Schaumburg, and the suburbs?

Yes, the collar counties are covered from the North Shore to Joliet. Suburban streets are wide, and the truck usually reaches the curb. Pricing and timing match the city. If your street is inside the city grid, send its name so we can check the viaducts.

Can you take a car that will not start?

Yes, we ship cars that will not start out of Chicago all the time. A winch-equipped carrier loads it, and the slower loading adds a fee. Say if it can roll, steer, and brake. That decides the carrier.

What do you need for a Chicago car shipping quote?

Start with the two addresses. Next, give the year, make, and model. After that, whether it runs and rolls. Finally, open or enclosed and your dates. That covers everything for an accurate Chicago quote. Precise details, precise price.
