California

California auto transport across five regions and the busiest outbound lanes in the country

California auto transport is really five markets sharing one spine, and each region ships for its own reasons.

Ship Guy is a licensed auto transport broker. We book vetted carriers across California, and we do not own the trucks.

Interstate 5 runs the length of the state from San Diego to Oregon. Interstate 10, 15, 40, and 80 leave it for the rest of the country. The passes they cross set the winter schedule.

This page covers the regions, the outbound migration lanes, and the mountain passes and fire season. It also covers the emissions rule for inbound cars, the bases, and the ten city pages.

California at a glance

Most pickups happen within 1 to 3 days in the metros. The North Coast, the Sierra, and the far desert run 2 to 4 days.

Phoenix, Las Vegas, and in-state lanes run same day. Portland and Salt Lake City take one to two days. Texas runs three, and the East Coast four to five.

California sends more cars to other states than any state in the country. Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, and Idaho are the busiest outbound lanes, and volume keeps them competitive.

The Regions

Southern California, the Bay Area, the Valley, the Coast, and the North

Where the car sits in California decides the corridor, the carrier pool, and the timing.

Southern California holds the largest carrier pool in the West. Los Angeles, Orange County, the Inland Empire, and San Diego all have their own pages. Each covers meeting spots and timing.

The Bay Area works on meeting points, hills, and bridges. San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose each have a page. Sacramento covers the capital and the Interstate 80 gateway.

The Central Valley runs on Highway 99 and Interstate 5 through Bakersfield, Fresno, Modesto, and Stockton. It is flat, fast, and served by every carrier crossing the state.

The Central Coast from Santa Barbara to Monterey sits on US 101. The North Coast and the far north are remote. Redding, Eureka, and the Sierra towns add a day or two.

Outbound

California to Texas, Arizona, Nevada, and Florida

No lanes in the country carry more household cars than the ones leaving California.

Families relocating to Austin, Dallas, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Boise, and Nashville ship one car and drive the other. Corporate packages often cover the shipment.

Carriers price those lanes competitively because they run full. The return leg into California is lighter. Inbound quotes on the same routes can run a little higher.

Retirees heading for Arizona and Nevada add a seasonal wave each fall. The state-to-state page covers the interstate side of any relocation.

*2026 estimates for a running sedan on an open trailer. Priced from Los Angeles, or the Bay Area where noted. SUVs and pickups add roughly 10 to 25 percent, and enclosed adds more. Direction, season, and carrier availability on your dates set the real quote.

Las Vegas and Phoenix are the cheapest lanes because carriers run them all day. The Texas lanes are long but busy, which holds their price down.

Electric vehicles can price slightly higher on some lanes because of weight. The rest of the variables sit in the cost guide.

The Passes

Chain Controls, the Grapevine, and Fire Season

Every route out of California crosses a pass, and the passes set the winter and summer schedules.

Interstate 80 over Donner Pass and US 50 over Echo Summit carry chain controls from November through April. A loaded carrier waits below the control point rather than chain up.

The Grapevine and Cajon Pass close for snow a few times each winter. Both reopen within a day, and we tell you when a pass is in play.

Fire season runs from June through November. Closures on Interstate 5, Interstate 80, and US 101 can reroute a carrier by hundreds of miles. Smoke slows everything.

Atmospheric rivers flood the valley and the coast in winter. A carrier waits out a washed-out highway rather than detour through the hills.

Coming In

The Emissions Rule and the Smog Check

California treats an arriving car differently from any other state, and the rule surprises people.

A vehicle with fewer than seven thousand five hundred miles must meet California emissions standards. Otherwise it cannot be registered here. Most cars sold in the country do, but not all.

Check the emissions label under the hood before you ship a nearly new car in from another state. A car that does not qualify cannot be registered until it passes the mileage threshold.

Used cars coming from out of state go through a smog check at registration. None of this changes the shipment itself, but it can change whether you should make it.

Military

Pendleton, San Diego, Twentynine Palms, and the Rest

California has more military households than any state, and they move every summer.

Camp Pendleton, the naval bases in San Diego, and the Marine air station at Miramar anchor the south. Twentynine Palms and Fort Irwin sit in the high desert. Edwards and Vandenberg fly from the Antelope Valley and the coast.

Travis and Beale serve the north, and Lemoore the valley. The language school and postgraduate school sit in Monterey. Each has a gate, so the handoff happens outside it.

Many families ship a second vehicle on their own, since orders may cover just one. Ship Guy is a private broker with no military affiliation, and our military page covers PCS timing.

Who Else Ships

Universities, Ports, Electric Cars, and the Desert

A few more patterns show up across the state.

The university campuses from San Diego to Davis send cars in each September and home each June. Campus streets are tight, so the handoff moves to a lot nearby.

The ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Oakland receive imported cars. We ship them domestically once customs releases them, and the ocean leg is separate.

California has the highest electric-vehicle share in the country. Charge to roughly half, turn off security recording, and leave a key card with the driver.

Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley fill with winter residents each fall. Lake Tahoe and Mammoth fill with skiers. Both ship cars on a seasonal calendar.

Your Options

Open or Enclosed in California?

Open transport is the everyday choice, and the outbound migration rides it.

Enclosed transport keeps a car covered against sun, fire debris, and attention. Southern California ships more exotics and collector cars than anywhere in the country. Enclosed carriers are always busy.

A commuter car ships open without a second thought. Both are laid out on our open and enclosed pages.

The Basics

How It Works and How to Prepare

Three steps: settle the price, hand off the car, take delivery.

After approval, a carrier on the corridor takes the booking. The driver documents the car’s condition on a Bill of Lading before loading, and you sign it. That document is what you inspect against at delivery.

The how it works and preparation guides go step by step.

California FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to ship a car from California to Texas?

Los Angeles to Austin or Dallas usually runs nine hundred to twelve hundred fifty dollars for a sedan. It is about fourteen hundred miles on Interstate 10. Houston is a bit more. The Bay Area adds about four hundred miles and a hundred dollars. The lanes run full, which keeps them competitive. Larger vehicles add 10 to 25 percent more.

Why is it cheaper to ship a car out of California than into it?

Because the outbound lanes run full and the return legs run light. Families relocating to Texas, Arizona, Nevada, and Florida fill carriers leaving the state. The same trucks come back with empty spots to sell. Inbound quotes on the same route can run a little higher, especially outside the fall season.

Does winter close the routes out of California?

A few times a season. Interstate 80 over Donner Pass carries chain controls from November through April. A loaded carrier waits below them. The Grapevine on Interstate 5 and Cajon Pass on Interstate 15 close for snow. Both reopen within a day. We tell you when a pass is in play.

Can I ship a new car into California from another state?

Only if it meets California emissions standards. A vehicle with fewer than seven thousand five hundred miles must be California-certified to be registered here. Check the emissions label under the hood first. Used cars go through a smog check at registration. The shipment itself is the same either way.

How does fire season affect car shipping?

Closures on Interstate 5, Interstate 80, and US 101 can reroute a carrier by hundreds of miles. Smoke slows everything. From June through November we watch the closures and tell you when a route changes. Windows in fire-prone corridors include a cushion.

Can you handle a PCS move to Camp Pendleton, San Diego, or Twentynine Palms?

Yes, military households are the largest single group we ship in California. Many families ship a second vehicle on their own, since orders may cover just one. Every base has a gate, so the handoff happens outside it. The pickup follows your report date. Ship Guy is a private broker and nothing more.

Do you pick up on the North Coast or in the Sierra?

Yes, Redding, Eureka, Chico, and the Sierra towns are covered. Those areas sit off the corridors, so pickups run 2 to 4 days rather than 1 to 3. Mountain and coastal roads with no shoulders mean the driver meets you on the highway or in town.

How should I prepare an electric car for shipping from California?

Charge it to roughly forty to sixty percent and turn off security recording. Use transport mode if the car has one. Leave a physical key card or fob with the driver, since phone keys alone can fail. Tell us the exact model, because battery weight affects how the carrier builds the load.

Can you ship a car that does not run in California?

Yes, non-running cars ship from every part of California. A winch-equipped carrier loads it, and the added time is a fee. Report whether it rolls, steers, and brakes, and we send the right truck.

What do you need for a California car shipping quote?

Both addresses, and the meeting spot if you are in a hillside or permit-parking neighborhood. The year, make, and model, and whether it is electric. Whether it runs and rolls. Open or enclosed, plus your dates. That is everything a California quote needs.
