New York

New York auto transport from the parkways that ban trucks to the snow belt on the lake

New York auto transport is two states in one. Downstate keeps carriers off its parkways, and upstate stretches four hundred miles to Buffalo.

Ship Guy is a licensed auto transport broker. We book vetted carriers across New York, and we do not own the trucks.

The Thruway carries Interstate 87 and 90 from the city through Albany to Buffalo with tolls. Interstate 81 runs from Binghamton through Syracuse to Watertown, and Interstate 84 crosses the Hudson Valley. The Long Island Expressway carries the island.

This page covers the parkways, Long Island and the Hudson Valley, and the Thruway and the upstate cities. It also covers Fort Drum, the snow belt, the Florida lane, and the city with its own page.

New York at a glance

Most pickups happen within 1 to 3 days downstate and along the Thruway. The Adirondacks, the Catskills, and the North Country run 2 to 5 days.

Boston, Philadelphia, and Hartford are same-day lanes from downstate. Cleveland and Pittsburgh take a day from Buffalo. Florida runs three to four from anywhere.

Manhattan has its own page covering the meeting points across the river. This page carries Long Island, Westchester, the Hudson Valley, Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo.

The Parkways

Where a Car Carrier Cannot Go Downstate

Downstate New York bans commercial vehicles from most of the roads its residents use every day.

The Northern State, Southern State, and Meadowbrook parkways on Long Island prohibit trucks. So do the Taconic, the Saw Mill, the Hutchinson River, and the Bronx River parkways.

Carriers use the Long Island Expressway, Interstate 95, Interstate 287, and the Thruway instead. They meet you at a lot or a wide road near an exit.

On Long Island, that means the lots along the Expressway and Sunrise Highway. In Westchester, it means Route 9, Central Avenue, or the lots near Interstate 287.

The bridges and tunnels charge tolls, and the Thruway charges by the mile. All of them are built into every quote.

Long Island & the Hudson Valley

Nassau, Suffolk, the Hamptons, and Westchester

Downstate outside the city is suburbs, estates, and a summer season at the east end.

Nassau and western Suffolk are dense suburbs with narrow residential streets and low trees. The driver meets you on a main road or at a lot off the Expressway.

The Hamptons and Montauk fill from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and the two roads east crawl. Second-home owners ship cars out in May and home in September. The handoff happens on Route 27 or in town.

Westchester and the Hudson Valley have estates on winding roads and villages with tight downtowns. Scarsdale, Rye, and Chappaqua meet the truck on a main road. The newer subdivisions in Orange and Dutchess allow curbside.

West Point sits above the river on a winding road, and the academy runs on the cadet calendar. Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh adds rotations.

*2026 estimates for a running sedan on an open trailer, priced from the nearer region. SUVs and pickups add about 10 to 25 percent, with enclosed higher again. Thruway and crossing tolls are included, and season plus carrier availability on your dates set the real quote.

Downstate lanes to Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington are among the cheapest anywhere, because the corridor never stops. Upstate lanes to Cleveland and Chicago run on the Interstate 90 freight traffic.

The Florida lane swings with the calendar more than with distance. The cost guide explains the remaining factors.

The Thruway

Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo

Upstate New York lines up along the Thruway, and each city ships for its own reasons.

Albany is the capital. State government, the nanotech corridor, and the medical center relocate people on start dates. The Capital District suburbs are wide grids where the truck reaches the curb.

Syracuse sits where the Thruway meets Interstate 81. The university and a new chip plant draw engineers and students. Rochester ships on optics, the university, and its hospitals. Buffalo ships on the border, the medical campus, and the Bills.

Ithaca, Binghamton, and the Finger Lakes sit off the Thruway on Interstate 81 and 86. Ithaca’s hills and gorges are the steepest campus setting in the state. The driver meets you on Route 13.

If your employer reimburses the shipment, we supply the records it asks for. The state-to-state page holds the interstate side.

Military

Fort Drum, West Point, and Fort Hamilton

New York’s largest post sits in the snowiest corner of the state.

Fort Drum near Watertown deploys and returns whole brigades, and families rotate year round with a summer peak. The post sits on Interstate 81 in the Tug Hill snow belt. Winter pickups wait for the plows.

West Point runs on the cadet calendar, and Fort Hamilton in Brooklyn ships through the city meeting points. The Air National Guard bases at Stewart, Niagara Falls, and Hancock Field add rotations.

Many families ship a second vehicle through us, because orders often cover just one. Housing at each post is gated, and the driver meets you outside. Ship Guy is a private broker with no ties to any post or academy. PCS timing is laid out on our military page.

The Snow Belt

Lake Effect, the Tug Hill, and the North Country

Upstate New York gets more snow than anywhere east of the Rockies, and the lakes deliver it.

Lake-effect snow buries Buffalo, Syracuse, Watertown, and the Tug Hill from November through March. A foot can fall in an afternoon on one side of a city. The other side stays dry.

Carriers wait for the plows on the Thruway and Interstate 81. A winter pickup in the snow belt can slide a day or two. Road salt runs all winter, and collector-car owners often choose enclosed transport for it.

The Adirondacks and the North Country sit on two-lane roads through the largest park in the lower forty-eight. Lake Placid, Saranac Lake, and Plattsburgh run 2 to 5 days. The driver meets you on the state route or in town.

Downstate, nor’easters close the corridor a few times a winter. The Catskills add a summer season and a winter ski season on winding mountain roads.

The Florida Lane

October Out, April Back

Long Island and Westchester send more cars to Florida each fall than most states.

Retirees ship cars to Boca Raton, Palm Beach, Naples, and Sarasota from October through December. They bring them home from April through June. Interstate 95 carries the whole trip.

Because the volume is so large, the lane stays easy to book even at the peak. Two to three weeks of notice keeps the price steady, and our snowbird page has planning tips.

Buffalo, Rochester, and the upstate cities send a smaller wave down Interstate 79 and 77. The same seasonal logic applies.

Your Options

Open or Enclosed in New York?

Open transport is the everyday choice, and the corridor and the Florida lane both run on it.

Enclosed transport keeps a car covered against road salt, lake-effect slush, and attention. The Gold Coast of Long Island, Westchester, and the Hamptons keep enclosed carriers busy with collector cars.

A commuter car rides open up the Thruway without a second thought. Our open and enclosed pages compare the pair.

The Basics

How It Works and How to Prepare

A price, a handoff on a road a trailer is allowed to use, and a delivery. The tolls are counted.

Once the price is approved, a carrier on the corridor or the Thruway takes the booking. The driver records the car’s condition on a Bill of Lading, and you sign it before it loads. That record is what the delivery inspection is measured against.

The how it works and preparation guides go step by step.

New York FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the carrier come to my house on Long Island or in Westchester?

Usually not to the door. The parkways ban trucks, and the residential streets are narrow with low trees. The driver meets you on a main road or at a lot off the Expressway or Interstate 287. It is a short drive from the house. Newer subdivisions in Suffolk, Orange, and Dutchess often allow curbside.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Long Island or upstate to Florida?

Orlando from Long Island usually runs seven hundred sixty to ten hundred eighty dollars for a sedan. It is about eleven hundred miles down Interstate 95. Miami runs a little more, and the upstate cities add a hundred to two hundred dollars. Season counts for more than the miles, and a southbound car in November costs more than in July.

Are the Thruway and bridge tolls added to my price?

They are built into every quote. Carriers pay the Thruway by the mile and the bridges and tunnels by the crossing and price accordingly. There is no separate line. Interstate 81, 84, and 86 carry no toll.

Can you handle a PCS move to Fort Drum?

Yes, Fort Drum near Watertown rotates brigades year round, with a summer peak. Many families ship a second vehicle through us, because orders often cover just one. Housing is gated, so the driver meets you outside the post. Winter pickups in the Tug Hill snow belt wait for the plows. Ship Guy is a private broker with no ties to any post or academy.

Does lake-effect snow delay shipments upstate?

Sometimes by a day or two. Buffalo, Syracuse, and Watertown get more snow than anywhere east of the Rockies. Carriers wait for the plows on the Thruway and Interstate 81. We tell you the moment the forecast shifts the plan.

Do you deliver to the Hamptons in summer?

Yes, with timing. The two roads east crawl from Memorial Day through Labor Day. We schedule Hamptons handoffs for weekday mornings on Route 27 or in town. Second-home owners ship cars out in May and home in September.

Do you serve Albany, Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo?

Yes, everywhere outside the Manhattan page is covered here. The four Thruway cities schedule in 1 to 3 days. Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Chicago are their natural lanes. Ithaca, Binghamton, and the Finger Lakes take an extra day.

Can you ship a car for a Cornell, Syracuse, or SUNY student?

Yes, student cars ship each August and again each May. Ithaca's hills are the steepest campus setting in the state, and the driver meets you on Route 13. Other campuses use a lot nearby during move-in. An adult signs off on a student car.

Can you ship a car that does not run in New York?

Yes, non-running cars ship from every part of New York. A winch-equipped carrier loads it, and the extra time is added to the price. Say whether the car rolls, steers, and brakes.

What do you need for a New York car shipping quote?

Both addresses, with the town for a parkway neighborhood, an estate road, or a North Country pickup. The year, make, and model. Whether it runs and rolls. Open or enclosed, and the window of dates. That is a complete New York quote request.
