Portland, Oregon
Car shipping in Portland is easy on the Interstate 5 corridor. Every other direction takes a little more thought.
Ship Guy is a licensed auto transport broker. We book vetted carriers across Portland and both sides of the Columbia. We book the trucks rather than own them.
Interstate 5 runs from Seattle to California through the middle of the city. Carriers use it all day. Interstate 84 east into the Gorge is a different story in winter.
This page covers the corridor, the river crossing to Vancouver, the Gorge, and the hills a trailer avoids. It also covers the tech relocations and the electric cars that fill Oregon driveways.
Most pickups happen within 1 to 3 days, fastest on Interstate 5 lanes.
Seattle and Eugene are same-day lanes. The Bay Area and Sacramento take one to two days. Boise runs about a day on Interstate 84.
A rare snow or ice day shuts Portland down completely, because the hills do not get plowed. Carriers wait it out, and so should you.
The Spine
Almost everything that ships out of Portland rides Interstate 5.
North, the freeway crosses the Columbia on the Interstate Bridge into Vancouver, Washington. Interstate 205 crosses a few miles east on the Glenn Jackson Bridge.
Both bridges carry carriers without trouble, and Vancouver, Camas, and Clark County are covered on this page. The state line adds no paperwork for a domestic move.
South, Interstate 5 runs to Salem, Eugene, and California. Seattle, Sacramento, and the Bay Area are the busiest lanes in either direction.
The 405 loop and the 217 connect downtown to the west side. A carrier can reach most of the metro from the freeways in twenty minutes.
The Gorge
The Columbia River Gorge is the only way east, and it makes its own weather.
Interstate 84 follows the river toward Hood River, Pendleton, and Boise. Wind funnels through the Gorge year round, and a high-profile trailer slows down when it gusts.
In winter, freezing rain coats the Gorge while the city stays wet. Interstate 84 closes a few times a season, and carriers wait for it to reopen.
That is why Boise and Salt Lake City lanes run longer than the map suggests in winter. We tell you when the Gorge is in play.

*Estimated 2026 ranges for an operable sedan on an open carrier. Add 10 to 25 percent for SUVs and pickups, and more for enclosed. Carrier availability on your dates fixes the actual number.
Interstate 5 lanes are the cheapest per mile because carriers run them constantly. Seattle and California in particular stay competitive year round.
Eastbound lanes through the Gorge cost a bit more and can stretch in winter. Size, condition, and enclosed service shape the rest, and the cost guide walks through them.
The Hills
Portland is flat on the east side and steep on the west, and a carrier feels the difference.
The West Hills and Forest Park neighborhoods climb winding roads with no shoulders. A seventy-five-foot trailer cannot navigate them, snow or shine.
The Alphabet District, the Pearl, and the inner east side near Hawthorne and Division are dense. Curb extensions and permit parking leave no room. Those are meeting-spot neighborhoods too.
Lloyd Center and the lots near the stadium work well. So do the big centers along 82nd Avenue and in Beaverton. Tell us your neighborhood and we will name one.
Gresham, Tigard, Tualatin, Hillsboro, and Vancouver have wide streets where the truck reaches the curb.
Who Moves Here
Portland relocations follow the chip plants, the hospital, and the school year.
The chipmaker and the sportswear company in Hillsboro and Beaverton relocate engineers and designers from across the country. Those moves follow start dates.
The health sciences university sits on a hill above downtown, reached by a tram and a switchback road. Residents and researchers arrive each June, and the handoff happens at the bottom of the hill.
Portland State, the University of Portland, Reed, and Lewis and Clark all bring cars in each September. They head home each June.
If your employer reimburses the shipment, we generate the paperwork it wants. The state-to-state page handles the interstate side.
Electric
Oregon has one of the highest electric-vehicle shares in the country, and Portland leads it.
There is no charging on the trailer. Half a charge is enough for loading, unloading, and a short drive at delivery.
Open and enclosed transport both work for electric cars. Many owners choose enclosed for a newer model.
Your Options
Open transport is the everyday choice, and the mild wet climate is easy on it.
Enclosed transport keeps a car covered against months of rain, road grit, and Gorge ice. Lake Oswego and the West Hills keep enclosed carriers busy with collector cars.
A commuter car rides open without a problem. The two choices are laid out on our open and enclosed pages.
The Basics
The process is short: agree on a price, meet the driver, take delivery.
After you approve the price, we assign a carrier to the route. The driver records the car’s condition on a Bill of Lading before loading, and you sign it. That record is your reference at delivery.
Our how it works and preparation guides cover each step.
Why Ship Guy
We know when the Gorge is iced over and which hills a trailer will not climb.
Ship Guy operates under active FMCSA brokerage authority backed by a $75,000 surety bond. Both sit on the public record.
You have one coordinator from quote through delivery. That contact can arrange open, enclosed, or expedited service. The services page lists the whole range.

Portland FAQ
In winter, sometimes. Freezing rain coats the Gorge while the city stays wet. Interstate 84 closes a few times a season. Wind slows a high-profile trailer year round. Carriers wait for the road to reopen rather than push through. Boise and Salt Lake City lanes run a little longer in winter. We tell you when the Gorge is in play.
No, the roads up there wind with no shoulders, and a seventy-five-foot trailer cannot navigate them. The driver meets you at the bottom of the hill on a wide street or in a lot. It is close by. Gresham, Beaverton, and Vancouver allow curbside on most streets.
Yes, both bridges over the Columbia carry carriers without trouble. Vancouver, Camas, and the rest of Clark County are covered on this page. The state line adds no paperwork for a domestic move. Pricing and timing match the Oregon side.
Charge it to roughly forty to sixty percent and turn off any security recording. Use transport or tow mode if your car has one. Leave a key card or fob with the driver, because a phone key by itself can fail. Tell us the exact model, because battery weight affects the load. There is no charging on the trailer.
San Francisco and San Jose usually run five hundred twenty to seven hundred fifty dollars for a sedan. Interstate 5 goes the whole way, about six hundred forty miles, and carriers run it daily. Sacramento is a bit less. Larger vehicles add 10 to 25 percent to the number. Run a quote with your dates in it.
The city shuts down, because the hills do not get plowed. Carriers wait it out, usually a day or two. Freeway lanes reopen first, and flat neighborhoods on the east side follow. We reach out as soon as the schedule changes. Snow days are rare, but they are absolute.
Yes, Hillsboro and Beaverton employers relocate people from across the country on start dates. We arrange the pickup around your first day. If your employer reimburses the shipment, we generate the paperwork it wants. Open, enclosed, and expedited transport are all offered.
Yes, we move student cars each September and June. Downtown and the inner east side are meeting-spot neighborhoods, so the handoff happens at a nearby lot. An adult must be there to sign for it. Both windows fill up, so book early.
Yes, we ship cars that will not start out of Portland often. The carrier uses a winch, and the longer loading adds a fee. Report whether it rolls, steers, and brakes, and we pick the truck.
Pickup address, delivery address. Year, make, model. Does it run and roll? Open or enclosed, and a date range. That is a complete Portland quote request. Specific answers, specific price.
