Durham, North Carolina
Car shipping in Durham follows a calendar most cities do not have. It runs on start dates, match dates, and residency cycles.
Ship Guy is a licensed auto transport broker. We book vetted carriers across Durham and the western Triangle, and we do not own the trucks.
Research Triangle Park brings scientists and engineers from across the country. Duke Health brings physicians on a schedule set years in advance. Both ship cars.
This page covers those moves, the campuses, and the Durham Freeway and the airport. It also covers the old tobacco district where a truck cannot fit.
Most pickups happen within 1 to 3 days. Interstate 40 and 85 meet on the edge of town.
Charlotte, Richmond, and Greensboro are same-day lanes. Washington and Atlanta are roughly a day out. New York runs two.
Residency programs start in late June. If you are a new physician arriving then, book the car in May, because that window fills.
The Park
Research Triangle Park is one of the largest research campuses in the world, and it never stops hiring.
Pharmaceutical, biotech, and software employers relocate people from Boston, the Bay Area, and everywhere between. Those moves follow a start date, not a season.
Most corporate packages include a vehicle shipment. If your employer reimburses it, we provide the documentation the package requires.
The Park sits between Durham and Raleigh along Interstate 40, minutes from the airport. Deliveries to Morrisville and the Park-side neighborhoods are quick.
The state-to-state page covers the interstate side of a relocation.
Duke Health
Duke Health moves more physicians in and out of Durham than any employer in the region.
Residency and fellowship programs start in late June and end at the same time. Match Day in March tells a new doctor where they are headed, and the car follows in June.
That makes June the busiest month of the year for Durham carriers. Booking in May keeps your options open.
The hospital campus and the surrounding streets are tight. The handoff for a medical-district address usually happens at a lot near the Durham Freeway.

*Estimated 2026 ranges, operable sedan, open trailer. SUVs and pickups cost about 10 to 25 percent more; enclosed costs more still. Live carrier availability on your dates determines the number.
Interstate 85 north to the mid-Atlantic and south to Atlanta carries most of the volume. Interstate 40 west to Nashville is steady.
Northeast lanes are busiest around June and August, when residents and students arrive. The cost guide explains the rest.
The Roads
Two interstates meet on the edge of Durham, and a freeway cuts straight through it.
Interstate 85 runs along the north side toward Richmond and Charlotte. Interstate 40 runs along the south toward Raleigh and Greensboro.
The Durham Freeway connects the two through downtown and past the hospital. The East End Connector ties it to Interstate 85 on the north side.
Raleigh-Durham International sits between the two cities, and fly-and-ship is routine. Brier Creek and the airport area are quick deliveries.
Most carriers stage on the interstates and use the Durham Freeway only for the pickup itself.
Campuses
Three campuses send cars through Durham carriers every August and May.
Duke sits on the west side, and its Gothic campus streets are not built for a trailer. North Carolina Central is on the south side with easier access.
The University of North Carolina is ten miles down the road in Chapel Hill. Many of its students and staff live in Durham.
For all three, the handoff usually happens at a lot near the freeway rather than at the dorm. An adult signs the paperwork for the car.
Basketball season adds a wrinkle. On big game nights at Cameron, the streets around Duke fill, and we schedule around them.
Access
Downtown Durham was built around tobacco warehouses and streetcar lines.
The American Tobacco district, Brightleaf, and the blocks around Parrish Street have narrow streets and tight parking. Trinity Park and Old West Durham are leafy and just as tight.
For those blocks, the driver meets you on a wide road or in a large lot. The lots near the ballpark and the big centers along 15-501 work well.
Hope Valley, Woodcroft, Southpoint, and the suburbs are wide and simple. There, the truck usually makes it to the curb.
Your Options
Open transport is the everyday choice, and the Carolina climate is easy on it.
Enclosed transport keeps a car covered against pollen, ice, and grit. Hope Valley and the Chapel Hill side keep enclosed carriers busy with collector cars.
A commuter car is right at home on an open trailer. Our open and enclosed pages compare the two options.
The Basics
A quote, a pickup, a delivery. That is the sequence, and nothing is hidden in it.
Approve the price and we book a carrier. The driver records the car’s condition on a Bill of Lading and you sign before loading. You check the car against it at the far end.
The how it works and preparation guides go step by step.
Why Ship Guy
We know the residency calendar and which downtown blocks a trailer cannot enter.
Ship Guy’s FMCSA brokerage authority is active, with a $75,000 surety bond behind it. Both are public.
You get one coordinator, quote to delivery. That contact can line up open, enclosed, or expedited transport. The services page lists the full range.

Durham FAQ
Book in May. Residency and fellowship programs start in late June. That window fills Durham carriers faster than any other month. We set a delivery window that lands the car a few days before orientation. The handoff for a medical-district address usually happens at a lot near the Durham Freeway. A responsible adult signs for the vehicle.
Yes, Park relocations are a large part of our Durham work. Scientists and engineers arrive from Boston, the Bay Area, and everywhere between on start dates. We schedule the pickup around your first day. When an employer reimburses the shipment, we produce the documentation. Deliveries to Morrisville and the Park side are quick.
Usually four hundred twenty to six hundred dollars for a sedan. The route runs up Interstate 85 and 95, about four hundred ninety miles. Volume on the corridor keeps pricing steady. Larger vehicles run 10 to 25 percent more. Run a quote for a firm number on your dates.
Not the narrow blocks themselves, usually. Downtown Durham was built around warehouses and streetcar lines, and the leafy older neighborhoods are just as tight. The driver meets you on a wide road or in a large lot nearby. It is a few minutes from your door. Hope Valley and the suburbs allow curbside.
Yes, we move student cars every August and again in May. Duke’s campus streets are not built for a trailer. The handoff happens at a lot near the freeway. North Carolina Central and Chapel Hill work the same way. An adult has to sign for the car. Both windows fill fast, so book early.
On big game nights, yes. The streets around Cameron fill hours before tipoff. A carrier cannot work near campus then. We check the schedule and plan a morning or an off day for west-side addresses. The rest of Durham runs normally.
Yes, flying in and shipping the car is routine in the Triangle. The airport sits between Durham and Raleigh, and Brier Creek is minutes away. Delivery goes in the days after you land. Someone over eighteen meets the driver and signs. Give us the flight date and we build around it.
Yes, Durham and Orange Counties are covered along with the Park. Chapel Hill is ten miles down 15-501, and many of its students and staff live in Durham. Hillsborough is a short run up Interstate 85. Pricing and timing follow the same Triangle logic.
Yes, we ship vehicles that will not start from Durham often. The carrier comes with a winch, and the slower loading carries a fee. Say whether it rolls, steers, and brakes under its own power. That decides which truck comes.
Start with where the car is and where it is going. Then the vehicle’s year, make, and model. Tell us if the car runs and rolls. Decide on open or enclosed and share the dates. That is everything an accurate Durham quote requires. The clearer the details, the closer the estimate.
