Raleigh, North Carolina

Car shipping for one of the fastest-growing capitals in the country

Car shipping in Raleigh serves a city that adds new subdivisions faster than the maps can keep up.

Ship Guy is a licensed auto transport broker. We book vetted carriers across Raleigh and Wake County, and we do not own the trucks.

Newcomers arrive from New York, New Jersey, and California every week. Most of them land in a planned community in Cary, Apex, or Wake Forest. That shapes the pickup.

This page covers those subdivisions and the state and university calendars. It also covers the Beltline, the tolled outer loop, the airport, and the storms that reach inland.

Raleigh at a glance

Most pickups happen within 1 to 3 days, with Interstate 40 running along the south side of town.

Charlotte, Richmond, and Wilmington are same-day lanes. Washington and Atlanta run about a day. New York runs two.

Tell us the subdivision name when you book. Half of Wake County is new construction. A brand-new street may not be on a carrier’s map yet.

The Suburbs

Cary, Apex, Wake Forest, and the New Subdivisions

Wake County has been one of the fastest-growing counties in the country for years.

Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, and Wake Forest add planned neighborhoods every season. Most have a homeowners association, and many have a gate.

A new street may not appear on a carrier’s map for months. Send the full address and the subdivision name, and we route the driver correctly.

New construction also means tight roads until the pavement is finished. If the truck cannot get to the house, the handoff moves to the entrance.

Timing delivery to a closing date is the most common Raleigh request. If the closing slips, tell us early and we move the window.

The Capital

State Workers, NC State, and the Tech Employers

Raleigh moves follow the state, the university, and the tech companies in equal measure.

State government is the largest employer downtown, and hiring pulls people in from across North Carolina. Those moves follow start dates.

North Carolina State University sits just west of downtown with more than thirty thousand students. Cars come in each August and go out each May.

Software and hardware employers in Cary, Morrisville, and the Park relocate engineers year round. A vehicle shipment is a common part of a corporate package.

If your employer reimburses the move, we provide the documentation. For the interstate side, see the state-to-state page.

Interstate 95 sits forty minutes east, and every Northeast and Florida lane rides it. Interstate 40 carries Nashville and the coast.

Northeast lanes stay busy year round because so many newcomers come from there. The remaining variables are covered in the cost guide.

The Roads

The Beltline, the 540 Toll, and the Airport

Raleigh is ringed by two loops, and one of them costs money.

The Beltline, Interstate 440, circles the inner city. The outer loop, 540, is partly a toll road. Carriers pay to use the southern and western sections.

Those tolls are built into every quote, so there is no separate charge. Interstate 40 runs along the south side and connects to both loops.

Raleigh-Durham International sits northwest of town between the two loops. Fly-and-ship is routine, and Brier Creek is minutes from the terminals.

US 1 and US 64 fan out to the suburbs. A carrier can reach nearly any Wake County address from the loops in fifteen minutes.

Access

Oakwood, Five Points, and Where the Truck Meets You

Raleigh’s older neighborhoods and its new ones ask different things of a carrier.

Historic Oakwood, Boylan Heights, and Five Points have narrow streets under old oaks. Glenwood South and downtown are full of apartment towers with decks. For those, the driver meets you on a main road or in a big lot.

North Hills, Crabtree, and the big centers along Capital Boulevard make easy meeting spots. Cary and the planned suburbs usually allow curbside once the truck is through the gate.

State Fair week in October fills Hillsborough Street and the fairgrounds area for ten days. We schedule west-side pickups around it.

Weather

Hurricane Remnants and Carolina Ice

Raleigh is far enough inland to skip the surge but not the storm.

Hurricanes that hit the coast send wind and rain across the Triangle a day later. Interstate 40 to Wilmington can close, and carriers wait for it to reopen.

Winter brings ice more than snow. A freezing-rain morning closes the interstates for a few hours, and a window can stretch by a day.

Neither stops shipping. We tell you when weather is in play and keep the window honest.

Your Options

Open or Enclosed in Raleigh?

Open transport is the everyday choice, and the Interstate 95 corridor runs on it.

Enclosed transport keeps a car covered against spring pollen, ice, and grit. North Raleigh and Cary keep enclosed carriers busy with collector cars.

A commuter car travels well on an open trailer. Our open and enclosed pages cover both.

The Basics

How It Works and How to Prepare

Three steps, no surprises: a quote, a pickup, and a delivery.

Once you approve the price, a carrier is lined up. At pickup the driver notes the car’s condition on a Bill of Lading, and you sign. That note is your checklist when the car arrives.

Our how it works and preparation guides cover each step.

Raleigh FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

My house is in a brand-new subdivision. Can the carrier find it?

Yes, if you send the full address and the subdivision name. Wake County adds streets faster than carrier maps update. We route the driver ourselves rather than trusting the map. New roads can be tight until the pavement is finished. The driver may meet you at the entrance. Include the gate code if there is one.

Can you time delivery to my closing date?

Yes, that is the most common Raleigh request. We aim the pickup so the car lands a day or two after you get keys. If the closing slips, tell us as early as possible and we move the window. A flexible range on your end makes it easier. We would rather adjust than deliver to an empty house.

Is the 540 toll added to my price?

It is folded into the quote. Carriers pay to use the southern and western sections of the outer loop and price accordingly. No separate line item appears. Routes that stay on Interstate 40 or the Beltline do not add anything.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Raleigh to New York?

Usually four hundred thirty to six hundred twenty dollars for a sedan. The route runs east to Interstate 95 and north, about five hundred miles. The lane is busy because so many newcomers come from the Northeast. Bigger vehicles add roughly 10 to 25 percent. A quote makes the number firm for your dates.

Can you ship a car for an NC State student?

Yes, we move student cars each August and each May. The campus sits just west of downtown. The handoff usually happens at a lot near Hillsborough Street or the Beltline. An adult signs at the handoff. Those two months fill up, so reserve early. State Fair week in October is a separate crunch on that side of town.

Can I fly into RDU and have the car brought to me?

Yes, fly-and-ship is common across the Triangle. The airport sits between the loops, and Brier Creek is minutes away. Delivery is set for the days right after you land. An adult needs to be there to meet the driver and sign. Send us the flight date and we schedule around it.

Can the carrier reach my street in Oakwood or Five Points?

Usually not the narrow blocks under the old oaks. The driver meets you on a wide road or in a nearby lot. North Hills and Crabtree both work. It is a short drive away. Cary and the planned suburbs allow curbside once the truck is through the gate.

Does a hurricane affect car shipping in Raleigh?

Sometimes, a day after landfall on the coast. Wind and rain cross the Triangle and Interstate 40 to Wilmington can close. Carriers wait for it to reopen. Winter ice does the same for a few hours at a time. We let you know the moment a route changes.

Do you handle cars that do not run?

Yes, non-running cars ship out of Raleigh all the time. A winch-equipped carrier handles the loading, which takes longer and adds a fee. Confirm that it rolls, steers, and brakes, or tell us which it cannot. We pick the carrier from that.

What do you need for a Raleigh car shipping quote?

Pickup and delivery addresses lead the list. Then the year, make, and model of the car. Then whether or not it runs and rolls. Then open or enclosed and a date range. That is the full list for an accurate Raleigh quote. Specific details, tight quote.
